A Masters Reflecting Global Change

With multinational organisations spanning cultures across the globe, business is one area of study that is truly international, making it an ever-popular choice for a large number of students studying specialist business Masters in the UK

A specific attraction of specialist Masters programmes is the extent to which new courses are responding to international trends in the global marketplace. This is particularly evident when looking at the rising number of new business courses in areas like e-business and information systems.

‘E-business is a global phenomenon. Growing and maturing economies with emerging businesses and government services will certainly be turning increasingly to e-solutions over the coming years. Governments around the world are already increasingly seeking to provide e-solutions that will increase access to services and lower costs,’ says Dr Chris Ivory Dregree Programme Director of the MSc in E-Business and Information Systems at Newcastle University Business School.

Recognising these changes in the field of international business, student Alvaro Quintero decided to enrol on the MSc at Newcastle, following his degree in Systems and Computing Engineering at the Universidad Industrial De Santander in Colombia.

‘I decided to pursue a postgraduate course in order to further hone the skills I had acquired on my undergraduate degree,’ explains Alvaro. ‘I also wanted to enhance my job prospects by specialising in e-business.

‘The most significant contribution that this course has made to my generic academic skills is that it provided me with a challenging mix of technical, computing work with valuable input from the field of business studies. The interdisciplinary nature of this course has helped me to widen my intellectual horizons. As a result I think I can get work in companies which specialise in the development and implementation of web services and new business models.’

The growing international relevance of e-business means that the subjects studied continue to be relevant to students after graduation. As Chris explains; ‘One of our students on the e-business Masters students will be starting on a PhD this year looking at e-solutions for the tourism ministry in her home country of Oman.’

For many students the experience of studying a business Masters can result in an academic experience, which is both personally and professionally rewarding for students, as Alvaro explains:

‘The overall experience of studying for a postgraduate degree in United Kingdom has been rewarding.  It has not only enriched me academically but has also given me an opportunity to experience a different culture and way of life.’
