How many educational institutions, and more specifically how many universities, are in SL? A comprehensive list can be found at SimTech.com.
A significant challenge for all of us when using SL for education purposes (i.e. teaching) is that you can not really rely on SL being online and open for business. ‘Black Wednesdays’ can be a serious show-stopper. A potential solution? Licence the technology to those who want to run their own servers. SL is fine as is for many applications and tweaking it and upgrading all the time often reduces the perceived benefits. This could be very similar to Google licencing their search and using it locally as intranet search facility. Then if needed, we can upgrade the server when significant milestones have been achieved.
