April

IBM are pushing forward on the metaverse front by unveiling a plan to host SL on theirservers as a stepping stone to greater adoption of virtual worlds across the enterprise. Introduced at an early stage April 3 at the Virtual Worlds conference in New York, the Second Life Grid lets companies create public or private virtual environments using Linden Lab’s 3-D virtual world technology. Like my new shoes?

28

October

Want extreme customisation? Go to Reebock’s island where according to Rivers Run Red avatars can live and experience the whole co-design process, using their virtual trainers to extend and express themselves just as in the real world, and experimenting with possibilities they might not have considered.

You first purchase a box for L$50, which contains a pair of DJII shoes that are ready to be customised. These come in 3 sizes to choose among. Once you puts them on the shoes can be customised by standing in front of a booth that provides the interface to colour each of the 12 shoe sections using the 17 available colours. When you are satisfied with the design, this can be transferred to the shoes for L$5. Now, would it be nice to be able to do this in the shop? Any shop with any type of product!

Summer is over?

30

August

Well the summer is… almost over, but we still have enough time to catch the last surf right?

Mathieu Basiat featured in the machinima, designs islands using RAW terrain files that can be uploaded to your sim, transforming it from the default Linden island to anyone of our 50 beautiful islands, complete with amazing, shallow beaches, white sand, and a completely natural look. Don’t take my word for it, try it out for yourself. While there don’t forget to the the jet ski!

Virtual Reality Room

05

May

The ad for VRR states “The Virtual Reality Room is an immmersive, photo-realistic environment that brings an unprecedented level of realism to Second Life” and VRR does exactly that. How long will it be before Second Life looks more like VRR? To see it in action search for ”VRR” in Places.

If you are going to do something, do it properly!

January

That’s what I always tell myself! So if you are planning to get married in SL then check out Bridal Carry v1.2. Of course you don’t really need to get married to carry around a friend or loved one but do think of your back! :)

Second Life: The Official Guide

04

January

If you are new to Second Life the official guide book may be of some use. It’s currently available on Amazon for around £16 and if you buy Neal Stephenson Snow Crash you pay around £22 pounds. Not bad, although I personally don’t like to stay away from ‘computer’ books. By the time you read the 352 pages of the guide Second Life would have evolved to something different, not to mention that these books get out of date before you even get to say teleport.

What about a present?

01

January

I have to admit it: most of the presents I got this Christmas were freebies. Not that I mind, but it would be nice to get a REAL present. So while looking around for the perfect present I came across Fabjectory who create built virtual objects in real life! (more…)
